People Vote in Favor of New Jail

Loser—One Dilapidated Jail

Prominent Among Losers in the county balloting was the dilapidated old jail structure at Blountville. County Court gave “tentative” commitment prior to the voting, to abide by wishes of Sullivan people should they express a desire for a new county jail by voting “yes” to an appropriation of $200,000 for the purpose in a referendum held in connection with the county general election. Most magistrates, in a recent poll, expressed willingness to appropriate for a new jail if the people wanted it. The referendum called for a special tax to be levied to produce the money.
